Speaking on the release, vocalist Field Cate shares:
""Sanitarium” was written during the height of the pandemic. It was a time when everything felt so unsafe and I was dealing with significant depression, anxiety, and loneliness. Ultimately indulging myself in a lot of codependency with a significant other, knowing this was a dangerous solution. But it felt really good. I was looking for somewhere to feel like I belonged and that fulfilled that for me. That feeling of safety inspired this song, a positive perspective on a negative decision. It felt like I entered a sanitarium, which is the origin of the name."
Not only was "Sanitarium" self-produced, but it was mixed by Henry Lunetta (5 Seconds Of Summer, State Champs, Grayscale) and mastered by Zach Fisher (Weezer, Rancid, Bad Religion). Prior to today's release, Fencer had previously dropped tracks "Junebug", "Fishfriend", and a cover of Morphine's "Buena" which had racked up over 1.5 million listens across all streaming platforms.
