Sevendust Burns Down The Bourbon!

Story and Photos: Spencer Fleming

Heavy Metal powerhouse Sevendust brought the Bourbon to its knees on Saturday (10.5.24) with their smashing performance of their classic album Seasons. If you're reading this today (10.7) crank that mother up becuase it's now officially 21 years old! I can't believe the album is that old already, but man, it surely is one of their best releases and my personal favorite. From front to back there are literally no skips. Twelve heavy, but catchy metal masterpieces.

Before the legendary Sevendust hit the stage we were treated to an all star classic and two new comers in 10 Years, Return To Dust, and Horizon Theory.

Horizon Theory from Michigan was up first. They got the crowd off to a rockin start with their shreddy riffs, stomping beats, and heavy screams. They were happy to be part of the tour and thanked Sevendust for giving them such a great opportunity.

Up next were the young guns Return To Dust. I had never seen these guys but I was surely familiar with their music because I get frequent emails from their publicist Cosa Nostra P.R. Shout out to Charley, Eter, and Becky!

These dudes hit the stage with force and blasted us with good old fashioned rock and roll. They had a unique blend of Alice In Chains meets Deftones. I noticed their lead singer Matty had the eyes from the Deftones album Ohms tattooed on his stomach which was super cool. As I rocked out there were some younger girls next to me maybe 15 or 16 who were there with their parents. They were pointing and whispering to each other the whole set. I almost wanted to say "cover your eyes children!" "These Chris Cornell looking guys will corrupt you!" Haha!

Return To Dust played about 7 songs from their debut self titled album including one of my favorites of the night "Celophane". It had this fast chugging riff reminiscent of "My Own Summer" by Deftones. I talked to the guys at the merch booth later on in the night and told them I heard the similarities. They reacted as if I had cracked the secret code, ha! I'm just obsessed with Deftones so it was easy for me to pick up on. I had a really fun time during their set and there's rumor that the band may be making their way to Omaha soon. Give Return To Dust a follow on social media so you can catch them the next time they're in town!

After having our faces melted it was time for the direct support 10 Years! I was so stoked for this show because 10 Years is a much slept on favorite of mine. These guys are road warriors who have been grinding for years. They've had a lot of hits along the way but I feel like they still fly a bit under the radar. The band had a warm introduction from Animal at 104.1 The Blaze. The crowd cheered when Animal said "Who all tailgated all day and then came here?" Lincoln was in a great mood after the Husker win and they were ready to tear the Bourbon to pieces!

Jesse and crew hit the stage and opened with a crowd favorite "Shoot It Out". The room lit up as the circle pit started and bodies were moving everywhere. Both on my left and right were massive 10 Years fans. To my left was Jenna who has seen the band 33 times and has a 10 Years tattoo on her wrist! To my right were the parents of the teen girls and they said they'd seen 10 Years over 20 times and drove all the way from South Dakota for the show! It's awesome to meet fans who follow bands so passionately.

For a good 45 minutes 10 Years blasted us with hit after hit including "Fix Me", "Beautiful", "The Shift", and "Novocain". They even pulled out a sweet cover of Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box". The band has a new release coming soon and they played their new single that will be playing on The Blaze "The Optimist". 10 Years did such an awesome job whipping the crowd into a frenzy. By the time Sevendust was ready to play the room was pulsing.

Animal and Roadie came out one more time to welcome Sevendust and thank the crowd for selling the show out.

The place was absolutely packed with fans by now ready to rock! Lajon stepped out in a 10 Years shirt and Sevendust ripped into the first song from Seasons "Disease". The band was amped and ready to burn the Bourbon down! Following "Disease" the band played "Enemy" one of their biggest songs and the second track of the album. Between songs Lajon spoke to the crowd about how much Nebraska means to them and how appreciative they were for all the support over the years. Of course the band got a huge response when Lajon congratulated the Huskers on their win over Rutgers.

Going track by track Sevendust tore through the Seasons album leaving the crowd in pure awe. Lajon joked that the energy was so awesome he wanted to take the Lincoln crowd with them to the next couple towns. "One day I'm gonna have enough money to pull up with a bunch of tour busses and take you guys on the road with us and hit all the next cities so we can show em how y'all get down". This was high praise coming from such a legendary band. After playing through Seasons Sevendust hit us with a classic encore of "Pieces", "Rumblefish", and "Praise". The crowd was on their feet from front to back with fists in the air taking in the chugging riffs and beautiful melodies.

Sevendust is one of those bands that just doesn't miss. Any time they are in Lincoln or Omaha you can bet I'll be there to capture it!

A huge thanks to Sevendust management and The Bourbon Theater for photo access. Thanks to 104.1 The Blaze for bringing another killer sold out show!
